Message from the Sail Captain

Wednesday, 16th March 2016

All sailors who race at SYC need to be members.

Like all sporting Clubs, there are fees associated with regular usage of that facility and enjoying the services it provides. At SYC we make it easy and affordable for potential new members to try out sailing and our facilities without having to immediately subscribe to annual membership.

It is the Clubs position, and has been since 2011, that all sailors who race as part of the SYC racing calendar need to be annual members or day pass members. This is why we introduced the day pass scheme and my thanks to everyone who has enforced this on their boat.

Every now and then we conduct ‘day pass audits’ and the most recent one highlighted that many regular users of our facility are non-members. What’s worse, when asked to take out a day pass for the day a number of these ‘non-members’ became abusive (to the staff). Furthermore one decided it was appropriate to mislead us and then vent criticism on social media.

SYC is a member based organisation. As such our rules outline that all regular users of the club need to have membership status of some description. This is reflected in our notice of races, by-laws, constitution and in the YA rules of sailing. It is a non-negotiable requirement.

If you have crew who are not SYC members, then they can take advantage of our day pass membership scheme. It is affordable and enables them to sail up to 12 times before they need to make the leap to annual membership. Day pass membership provides YA personal accident insurance*, it ensures the day pass member also does not need to sign into the bar on the day of use and they will also pay member prices in the bar.

Day pass memberships are available from the boating office reception. As the boat owner if you would like a booklet of 5 free day passes they are available to you at the boating office.

Looking ahead the day pass audits will continue on a frequent basis. Please do not be offended if you or any of your crew are queried on your membership status.

If you would like to discuss please give myself or CEO Richard Hewett a call to discuss. More information on the scheme is available online at https://syc.com.au/membership/admission-process/day-pass-membership/

*Personal accident insurance is provided as part of your day pass fee (at no extra cost). On Thursday twilight races (when we do not charge for day passes) you may opt to take out insurance for $5.
