Women in Sailing Challenge (WISC)

11th February 2018

Commodores Challenge

20st May 2018

Sandringham Yacht Club is the proud host of two signature women’s sailing events, the Women In Sailing Challenge (WISC) and the SYC Commodores Challenge. Both events aim to showcase women’s sailing and encourage greater female participation in our sport.

WISC has evolved over the years, yet still holds dear the main values and goals instilled by its founders over 20 years ago. WISC is a one day keelboat event, which aims to encourage the participation of both novice and experienced female sailors. The event incorporates fleet racing with a separate cruising division and one-design racing on the SYC Beneteau 7.5’s. The regatta result also counts as Race 2 of the Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series (PPWCS), facilitated by the Women & Girls in Sailing committee.

To enter a team for the WISC, women are required to occupy key positions on each boat including; bow, helm and mainsail trim. Each boat must also meet or exceed the ratio of female: male crew members. If you are interested in crewing or skippering but are struggling to put together a crew, you can register your interest on SYC’s crew register https://syc.com.au/discover/crew/. If you have a crew but no boat you can apply to race one of SYC’s Beneteau 7.5’s in the one design racing fleet by contacting James Sly on 9599 0907 or James.Sly@syc.com.au. Or finally, if you are a boat owner and open to handing over the reins of your boat, please get in contact with us directly by talking to James Sly or Maddie Commins in the boating office or emailing wisc@syc.com.au.

This year the WISC is supported by major sponsors – Blair Shipwrights, Sustainable Development Consultants and Data Agility.

The SYC Commodores Challenge commenced in 2016 as a new female only regatta which aims to promote competitive one-design women’s racing in Port Phillip Bay. In this regatta Commodores from around the bay are invited to select their best team of female sailors to compete in a competitive one-design racing event on SYC’s Beneteau 7.5’s. If you would like to register your interest as a club please contact wisc@syc.com.au

Women’s keelboat events to keep an eye out for in Port Phillip include:

  • Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series
  • Port Phillip Women’s Passage Series
  • Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta

Please note that as part of SYC’s focus on safety, an annual Man Overboard drill is required along with an associated declaration and crew register. This information is required to be lodged in October and remains current for 13 months. Failure to lodge this declaration may result in your result not being scored.  Man Overboard And Emergency Flow Chart Declaration
