Tackers is a fun introductory, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12 years. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience or club membership to participate. All the equipment, including the boats, is provided. Tackers is delivered in small groups of boats specifically designed for the program and supervised by Australian Sailing qualified Instructors and Assistant Instructors who are on the water all the time the kids are sailing.
If you have a child who is younger than 7 and is showing signs that they are keen to give sailing a try, it’s possible to enrol them into a 2 hour taster. Little Tackers allows children to build confidence on and around the water while wearing their lifejackets. Small group size means safe, fun sessions on the water.
Programs are either delivered as a 5 day holiday program or as series of sessions over several weeks either on Saturdays or after-school. Kids receive a certificate of achievement at the completion of each program.
There are three levels that kids can progress through (Tackers 1 is the first level), each level involves around 15 hours of participation. Each course is focused on having fun, playing games while learning the basics of sailing.
In Tackers 1 – Having Fun sailing kids sail in pairs in small boats. It’s a great way to meet new friends and kids have the chance to sail with different kids in their group.
The next level is Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques. If kids are confident, they can sail a boat on their own with lots of support, supervision and encouragement from the Instructor and Assistant Instructors.
The final level of the Tackers program is Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast! This is a chance for the kids to sail boats on their own, learning how to make the boat go faster and playing more games all whilst still under the guidance and support of the Instructor and Assistant Instructors.
The fun doesn’t stop when kids finish Tackers 3. SYC offers a Tackers Squad program for the kids to progress onto. Tackers Squad is a type of introductory fun racing where kids learn how to go round a race course with kids of similar ability where the main focus is on enjoyment.
