A west south westerly breeze averaging 21 knots with gusts averaging over 28 knots had been building the waves on Port Philip since the early hours of Wednesday morning. It reached a peak at 1133 when Fawkner Beacon recorded a gust of 39 knots. It was shortly after this that the race was abandoned “due to the weather”. But it was not over by any means. Close, but not right on cue, was a 36 knot gust of wind at Fawkner Beacon that occurred almost on the scheduled start time. One of 4 recorded between 1330 and 1400.
