Victorian Sailing Award – SYC Success!

Friday, 2nd October 2020

Congratulations to the following SYC members who were announced as winners of their respective award categories at the Victorian Sailing Awards.

Congratulations to SYC member Steve Aulich on being announced as Victorian Official of the Year!

Steve has had an exceptional season as one of our lead officials for all of the Laser regattas at SYC including a state championships, national championships and three world championships. In addition, Steve has assisted both interstate and overseas with the Foiling Kite circuit and his efforts to helping that new and exciting element of our sport grow is outstanding!

Steve was also a key contributor to both SYC and RGYC’s volunteer training programs last season as both Clubs worked towards an enormous season.

Congratulations Steve on an incredible season, we are so grateful to have you as a member of our great Club!

HUGE congratulations to SYC members James and Chris Mitchell for being announced as the winners of the Volunteer of the Year category!

James and Chris worked so incredibly hard in the lead up to and throughout the Laser regattas at SYC and RGYC. Without their efforts, Laser 2020 would not have been the same!

From all at SYC and those involved in Laser 2020, a sincere well done and a massive thank you!

We are super excited that our Club Marine Sandringham Yacht Club Boating Academy has been announced as the Discover Sailing Centre of the Year!

In what has been a tremendous year for our entire Club, our Club Marine Boating Academy soared to new heights! Last season saw SYC finishing as the Club having put the largest number of participants through our courses across the country!

A big thank you to all our academy participants and members as well as our dedicated team of staff who have helped us achieve this milestone! Special thanks to our Discover Sailing Coordinator, Juliet, and to our amazing team of instructors!

Congratulations to Matty Goss, on being announced as the winner of the Junior Sailor of the Year award for the second year in a row!

Matty had a great year in the Opti class both locoally and abroad. At the nationals, Matty finished 2nd Australian and qualified for the 2020 Optimist worlds. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, the worlds were cancelled and Matty didn’t get his last chance to shine in the Opti class before moving into a 420. Thankfully during the earlier part of the season Matty was able to compete in various regattas in the UK, Italy and Oman, all were he receive single digit results in fleets of up to 300+ boats, a great season to end on!

Congratulations to SYC member Jason Close on being announced as winner of the Offshore Sailor of the Year category!

After an unfortunate ending to the 2018 Rolex Sydney to Hobart race, Jason and the crew aboard Patriot bounced back and had an exceptional series of results in 2019. Finishing 9th overall, 1st in IRC division 5 and 1st in ORCi division 4, this truly was the perfect redemption!

Well done Jason for all your efforts!

A big congratulations to SYC member Ian ‘Wallie’ Wall on your Victorian Lifetime Achievement Award!

For over 33 years, Wallie worked with Australian Sailing – Victoria
(previously Victorian Yachting Council then Yachting Victoria) delivering exceptional service to the yachting community. Having assisted with a variety of programs over the years ranging from junior, youth and development programs to major events and countless school programs, the sport of sailing is indebted to you Wallie!

From all at SYC and around the state, a sincere thank you and congratulations to you Wallie on everything you have done for our great sport!

Congratulations to SYC Intermediate Member Tess Lloyd on being announced as Female Sailor of the Year!

Many years of hard work and commitment have finally paid off for Tess who achieved some great results on the world stage in the 49erFx class throughout the last season. This was topped off by gaining selection to represent Australia at the Tokyo Olympics in the 49erFx class along with crew Jamie.

Congratulations Tess and best of luck with your campaign leading into Tokyo 2021!
