The Inaugural Commodore’s Challenge

Tuesday, 2nd August 2016

The second attempt at the Inaugural Commodore’s Challenge proved successful on 31 July, this time, in typical Melbourne fashion, with wind conditions the complete opposite to the first hit out. The same five teams from the first attempt including Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC), Royal Brighton Yacht Club (RBYC), Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC), Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS) and Mornington Yacht Club (MYC) got together to battle it out in take two of the Inaugural Commodore’s Challenge which was held in a light breeze before abating to nothing.

After the first attempt, with only one race being completed before racing was abandoned for the day due to strong winds, a minimum of two races were required on Sunday’s take two to constitute a series. Three races were sailed on Sunday in a light 5 knot breeze before racing was again abandoned but this time due to too little wind.

After a slow start to the morning (possibly due to the late night celebrations at the SYC OTB reunion celebrating 61 years!), team SYC finished 3rd in the first race of the day before finishing up with two wins to claim victory of the Inaugural Commodore’s Challenge!

A big thank you to SYC Commodore Kate Mitchell, WISC representative Megan Aulich and our Race Officer Steve Aulich for all their hard work in making this event so successful! We would also like to thank our event sponsor, Tom Raft’s Fruit World. Tom Raft has been a strong supporter of Women’s Sailing for numerous years now and we thank him for his continued support! Thank you also to both our volunteer race management team and also to our umpires, without whom, this event would not have been possible!

Some photos from they day can be found on our Facebook page through the following link. Thanks to Jack Fullerton for coming down and taking the photos on the day!: https://www.facebook.com/SandringhamYC/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1089820761067017
