SYC Update 4 June 2021

Friday, 4th June 2021

CORRESPONDENCE TO SYC Members via email on Friday 4 June

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are managing to keep safe, well and warm. Wednesday’s announcement by the Acting Premier extends the circuit breaker restrictions for 7 days in metro Melbourne until Thursday 10 June 2021.

There was some news that changes things and this applies at SYC from today, Friday 4 June;

  • If you reside within 10km radius of SYC – For boat owning Members, and all Members who live within a 10km radius of SYC you can visit SYC (and check on your boat) whilst you are getting in your daily exercise (i.e. walking or riding) or buying food and beverage from the Ken King Centre. You can also drive to the Club, park and then get in your exercise.
  • Boat owners outside of the 10km radius – If you reside more than 10km from SYC, and you are a boat owner and you need to do absolutely essential maintenance, or conduct essential checks (and neither of these can be deferred until after the lockdown, and you cannot get a fellow Member who resides within the 10km to do this for you), then we are advised that you are permitted to come to SYC for this purpose. If this relates to you, then to support your trip we can issue you with a letter on club letterhead that sets out you are an SYC Member, you are a boat owner and your boat resides at SYC – and you need to check on your vessel for the listed reasons above. Please ensure that you are undertaking this journey within the intent and spirit of the restrictions. If you would like a letter along these lines please contact [email protected]
  • Expanded food offer at Ken King Centre – from today Friday 4 June, and thereafter daily from 9am-4pm, we will have ready to heat (or freeze) freshly made takeaway meals (soup, pasta, curries etc). Take away coffees and hot pies etc are also available. If you live within a 10km radius of SYC, then you may do your food shopping at SYC.
  • SYC Boat Yard the boat yard and travel lift operations will re-open today for repairs and maintenance works conducted outdoors and undertaken by professional contractors. At this stage, individual boat owners are not permitted to work on their boats. Freight and deliveries are permitted so if you have a vessel en route to SYC, or departing SYC via road transport, please reach out to Paul Gascoigne 0407 829 851.

The following information remains a tad unclear (@ Midday 4 June 2021);

  • Recreational Boating & Fishing – as per vic.gov.au Boating and Fishing is outdoor recreation and is permitted on the proviso it is within 10km, within 2 hrs, with a mask, with immediate family or one friend, and without requiring a closed venue to be opened. It remains unclear if Clubs like SYC are deemed closed venues, we would argue it isn’t as it remains accessible 24/7 to authorised members, and our boat storage areas are all outside and being accessed on a daily basis. Both the Boating Industry Association and Australian Sailing are presuming its allowed. Whilst the weather over the coming days is not overly conducive to boating, if it improves during the lockdown and you choose to go boating in line with the above, then please do so by personal choice. Should we receive further information we will be in touch.

The following information remains unchanged;

  • Communication – our phones will be manned daily from 10am – 4pm 9599 0999.
  • Safety Officer – We have a designated safety officer onsite each day to assist with our marina, facility and environmental obligations. Their name will be on display at the Ken King Centre.
  • Boat Checks – If you are unable to get down to the Club and you would like a staff member to check on your vessel, then please let boating know [email protected]
  • Clubhouse – the main clubhouse remains closed.
  • Organised Boating events – unfortunately we are not permitted to run any organised SYC boating activities during this lockdown.
  • COVID-19 requirements – If coming down, naturally all of the normal COVID-19 requirements apply whilst onsite – social distancing, wearing a face covering, practising good hygiene and scanning the QR code.

As further announcements are made, we will be in touch.

Warm Regards & Stay Safe,

Richard Hewett
