Wednesday Wonders Winter Series 2021 Race 7 – Calm Waters

It was a great turn out for what was only the second race of the series. The weather forecast was probably a good incentive. It pointed to a gentle sail with winds below 10 knots from the north east; seas below a metre; and no rain. It was calm at Fawkner Beacon at 1300 but the breeze did increase to around 4 knots for the start of the race. It averaged about 5 knots (the lowest wind speed of the series) for the afternoon and shifted from the south south east towards the east as the afternoon progressed. A fleet of 37 yachts started the race around course 27 – a northerly course which was shortened to 5.8 nautical miles. It was the finish at SYC 3 that created some doubt among the fleet with some yachts crossing the finish line in a northerly direction and others doing a “hook turn” and finishing in a southerly direction. The practical solution to the dilemma was to deem all yachts that crossed the finish line, regardless of direction, completed the race. Read More
