Recreational Boating’s Annual Fishing Competition

Sunday, 6th November 2016

Latest News from Recreational Boating:

Sandringham Yacht Club, through Recreational Boating embraces fishing as a family and fun on-water activity. With the Spring weather and the Snapper season upon us Recreational Boating hosted a Guest Speaker Night on 19th October in the Port Phillip Room. This popular information evening was attended by 58 eager fisherpersons (young and old) who attentively gained knowledge from Andre and Carl from Melbourne Fishing Charters. These experts who operate their two boats from St Kilda Pier provided insightful information and practical demonstrations about all things fishing and their after-presentation discussions with our members were well received.

This Guest Speaker Night was organised as a lead-up to SYC Recreational Boating’s Annual Fishing Competition to be held the following Sunday, 23rd October and each skipper who registered for the competition received a great gift bag of goodies including a handy fishing towel embossed with the SYC logo, (courtesy of Recreational Boating and prizes sponsored by R Marine Jacksons), tackle items, a Club Marine key ring bottle opener, a fishing ruler and safety information stickers. Already everybody was a winner!

Competition day arrived and the Sunday weather could not have been worse. Recreational Boating Club Captain Michael Kostos had the tough decision to make. With safety reasons, uppermost he postponed the morning’s activities but with lunches pre-organised by the Club and a general air of fishing excitement it was decided to continue the day and head to the Northern Podium to enjoy lunch, fellow members and many a fishing tale – tall or true! 36 boat entries were received and 75 keen punters were involved in this first attempt to haul in those mighty snappers.

Not to be daunted it is planned for another occasion for fisherpersons to win The Wayne Read Trophy. Sunday, 20th November is the date and hopefully winds, tides, moons, waves and baits will all coincide to enable fish to feed! On this occasion, it is planned to have a less formal morning with the weigh-in at 11:30hrs, followed by a sausage sizzle and presentations at the KKC. Further information about registration and updates will follow so please keep your eye on the SYC website under ‘latest news’.

Recreational Boating encourages all members of SYC to feel welcome to participate in events offered.
