Why is Membership important?

Membership is the lifeblood of SYC. Our fundamental purpose is to provide activities, facilities, social programs and training in accordance with the needs of the Members. To be financially viable in the long run we need regular users of our Club to subscribe to membership to enable us to do this.

What do I need to do to join as an SYC Member?

Fill in a membership application form and submit it to the office together with the applicable nomination fee. You will be scheduled into the next membership intake (currently monthly). If you have any queries related to the form or process then contact our Membership Officer, Andrea Seignior, in the office.

Are there any implications if I use SYC regularly and don’t join up?

First and foremost visitors to SYC are very welcome. Once a visitor becomes a very regular visitor then there are some things to be aware of:

  • If a visitor exceeds six visits per calendar year then they are not complying with our constitution (please refer to Section 10 of the Constitution – there are exceptions for spouses & family Members). The Club is governed by the Constitution and we all have an obligation to abide by it.
  • If a visitor ignores Section 10 of the Constitution and they use the Club regularly, they are more than likely not signing into “Full Club” licensed areas. This contravenes our liquor licence and exposes and jeopardises the Club and its staff to excessive fines, penalties and in extreme cases, loss of licence.
  • If a visitor sails regularly without membership status then their skipper is in breach of the Racing Rules of Sailing. This may lead to that boat being disqualified from the race. Furthermore if the visitor is not a Yachting Australia Silver Card holder (a benefit of membership) then they do not have Personal Accident Insurance.
  • The visitor is enjoying use of a facility that costs several $ million per annum to operate and the cost impact will be worn inequitably by those who do subscribe to membership.

What if I wish to trial SYC before subscribing to membership?

The Club provides a ‘Day Pass Membership’ at a minimal cost. This enables you to sail at the Club and to then use the clubhouse facilities post-race. The ‘Day Pass Membership’ allows you to do this up to 12 times before you need to subscribe to annual membership.   If you enjoy your trial period then we would be delighted to discuss the membership options available to you.  What’s even better, any money you spend on the Day Pass Membership will reduce your nomination fee when you do switch over to annual membership.

Can I meet and discuss SYC membership with a staff Member or SYC Member?

Yes you can ring our Membership Officer, Andrea Seignior, who will facilitate this for you.

What if I am new to the Club and don’t know anyone who can propose or second my application?

Ring our Membership Officer, Andrea Seignior, who will facilitate this for you.

Is Membership at SYC capped or going to be capped?

No category of SYC membership is capped. General Committee will preside over this issue should the need arise.

What Insurance Cover do I receive as a Yachting Australia Member?

For Silver and Youth Cardholders there is a Personal Accident Insurance, which covers cardholders for personal accidents which occur whilst boating or on yacht Club premises.
