INTRUSION MAKES IT NO. 11 – S80 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP 2019

Congratulations to Luke Reinehr and his crew Mike Keusgen, Aaron Cole, “Joffa” Goldsmith and Cameron Way. With consistent pace, smart tactics and excellent crew work they have taken out the S80 State Championship, held at Sandringham Yacht Club between 11-13 January 2019, with results of 1, 1, DNF, 2, 1, 2, 1.

This win now takes “Intrusion” to 11 State Titles and nine second placings in the last 20 years, which must be a record for consistency in one-design keel boat racing.

Conditions provided for champagne sailing with 10-20knts throughout the regatta. SYC’s race management team, headed by Michael Reinehr as Race Officer and Maddie Commins in the office did a terrific job in running the event for the 16 yacht fleet.

Although “Intrusion” finished with four firsts and two second placings for the regatta, the result went down to the wire. Luke and his crew needed to win the final race 7, as “Intrusion” had a DNF in race 3 which it needed to use as its “drop”. The DNF was a result of a broken lifeline during race 3 which saw Mike, Joffa and Cameron taking a swim. Fortunately, all 3 crew were back on board smiling in about 3 minutes, albeit wet and bruised. SYC’s “Imaginer” assisted in the recovery and after fine sailing through the fleet, and with redress was eventually rewarded with a 3rd place.

In second place by just one point was HBYC’s “Moonraker”, which sailed a very consistent regatta and provided intense competition for “Intrusion”. SYC was well represented at the front end of the fleet with Chris Byrne’s “Imaginer” coming in 3rd overall, John Robertson’s “Good Question”, 6th, Russell Keays’ “Bon Vivant” 10th (and first on handicap) and Brett Bereau’s “Jack Tar” in its first championship, 11th.
