Before the Big Trip

Club mannequin Wendy had a busy Sunday morning last weekend when the skipper and crew of “Blue Flyer” conducted a Man Over Board (MOB) exercise just off the SYC breakwater. Wendy managed to fall overboard five or six times during the exercise but was successfully picked up and brought back on board each time. Skipper Hugh Pilsworth will set sail in a few weeks time to make the journey back to Ireland aboard his 49 foot Jeanneau after having travelled out in 2009.  It’s expected that the trip will take around 12 months and accompanying him on the voyage will be a number of crew teams mainly made up  of SYC members. Although all on board have good sailing experience behind them and have sailed together a lot around the bay over the past year, they decided that a MOB situation is something that they should have as a well rehearsed routine. Over the past few weeks alongside this exercise, a number of items have been slowly ticked off a “to-do” list as they prepare for the journey. Depending on weather, it’s expected that they’ll set out on the Melbourne to Sydney leg of the journey after May 28th. If you’re interested in keeping up with Hugh’s adventures along the way, you can find his blog here:
