VALE PHIL BURKE

Thursday, 6th May 2021

The Commodore, Flag Officers, members and staff of Sandringham Yacht Club mourn the passing of Phil Burke. Phil passed away suddenly on Thursday 29 April, 2021.

Phil joined SYC in December 2001 and was a very popular member, a great volunteer for the Club and often offered his former boat Markeeta for use as an official boat in local regattas and for charity and fundraising events. He was an off-shore and Bay sailor regularly competing on SYC yachts Young Ones and Frenzy. Phil also was a great supporter of Recreational Boating and joined in the many boating and social activities it provided. Fishing was an important extra to his SYC life and he took great pride in taking his grandson Sonny out in the early hours for a fishing jaunt aboard Markeeta. He loved SYC, enjoyed the company and rapport of his yachtie mates, frequenting the Members’ Bar and dining there in order to keep his own kitchen clean, involving himself and partying with the best of them and generally being an active and respected member of our Club. A friend to many, a soft and smiling face around Row B, a true gentleman and a valued member of the SYC community. Vale Phil Burke.

The Memorial Service to celebrate Phil’s life will be held on Tuesday 11 May from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at Sandringham Yacht Club’s Port Phillip Room.  Shorts and boat shoes are encouraged.  All welcome.
