SYC OTB Success at Sail Country!

Friday, 9th November 2018

Over the long weekend, we had a number of our SYC OTB families travel to Albury Wodonga Yacht Club (AWYC) to compete in AWYC’s annual Sail Country Regatta which incorporated Australian Sailing’s Victorian Dinghy Championships. Given the popularity of the regatta, entries are capped at 200 boats as a result of the restricted water space to run their three courses. To give you an idea of just how popular the regatta is, the 200 spots were taken within three days of entries being opened!

This regatta is one of a few very unique opportunities in the sense that families can travel to AWYC and are able to camp at the Club. This provides the perfect opportunity for families and kids to mingle with one another and foster friendships. This was definitely done from our many SYC families that were in attendance at this year’s Sail Country Regatta!

SYC was very well represented with over 30 SYC boats competing in a range of different classes. These classes ranged from Optimist (green fleet, intermediate and open divisions), Open Bic’s, Lasers, Tasars, 29ers and 420’s.

We also had some great results across the board as follows:

Tasar Class:

  • 1st – James Sly & Aurelia Martin
  • 2nd – Paul and Bronwyn Ridgway

Fireball (incorporating the Victorian Fireball States):

  • 1st – Chris Payne and Heather Macfarlane

Junior Mixed Class Division:

  • 2nd – Ollie Van Der Slot (Open Bic)
  • 3rd – Riley Page (Open Bic)

29er Division:

  • 2nd – Pat Distefano and Oskar Henderson

Optimist Open Division:

  • 3rd – Matty Goss

Laser Standard:

  • 3rd – Andrew Robinson

This is definitely a fantastic event for those who haven’t been before so pop it down in your diary for next year!!
