Para World Sailing News

It was a day to remember for the Australian Sailing Team as they claimed two Rio 2016 Paralympic Games gold medals with a day to spare in the SKUD18 and Sonar.

Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch got the job done first, sealing the deal with two races remaining. Colin Harrison, Russell Boaden and Jonathan Harris followed their lead and wrapped up gold in the penultimate Sonar race.

The sailor celebrations began as soon as the five sailors hit the shore but the team will put their celebrations on hold as they aim to transfer their energy into their teammate Matt Bugg for the final day of racing. Bugg was disqualified from Race 10 in the 2.4 Norlin OD late on Friday evening and dropped to third, bumping up Helena Lucas (GBR) and Damien Seguin (FRA). The top two will fight it out in a showdown whilst Bugg will have to watch the chasing Dee Smith (USA) to claim bronze with gold out of the equation now.

Flamengo Beach is set to welcome 3,000 spectators on the final day of competition and the finale will make for gripping viewing with the remaining medals up for grabs on the Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain) racing area.
