Wednesday Wonders Winter Series 2018 Race 7 – Shortened Course Saves Race

With a forecast of a 10 to 15 knot breeze something stronger than what was received could have been expected. The start of the race did see a breeze of the higher strength but it had eased at Fawkner by 1430 to less than 10 knots. The average for the afternoon was about 11 knots. The lighter breeze resulted in a shortened course that saved the race. Had the 9.9 nautical mile 6 leg course 14 not been shortened then it is unlikely anyone would have finished the race. It was still a very close call. The winning yacht crossed the line with only 7 minutes 18 seconds spare. This gave the remainder of the fleet an additional 30 minutes to finish the race. Full use was made of the extra time with the last of 35 yachts crossing the finish line with 2 minutes 30 seconds to spare. Read more…
