For the second successive race yachts with handicaps of 40 minutes or more featured strongly at the finish line. A fleet of 37 yachts started the race in a north westerly breeze of about 13 knots. The race was around the 10.1 nautical mile course 28 – a course used on 3 previous occasions. By 1600 the wind had eased to 8 knots and the course was shortened by about 0.6 knots to allow more yachts to finish within the time limit. Despite her best efforts MIDNIGHT MAGIC (Bernadette Moore) was the only yacht not to finish in time, whilst DOLPHIN PLAY (John Brennan) retired. The tower records show DOLPHIN PLAY retired due to an impending mutiny. It is not known whether retiring prompted or resolved the mutiny. Read more…
