After long and careful deliberation race 6 was abandoned – the same fate befell race 6 of the previous summer series. This was the second successive abandoned race of this summer. A strong wind warning had been issued by the Bureau with a forecast of westerly winds of 20 to 30 knots in the early afternoon before easing during the evening. Observations at Fawkner Beacon showed the wind blew from the west at an average of about 21 knots for the afternoon with a gust of about 28 knots around 1600. By comparison the wind averaged about 24 knots at South Channel whilst further north in the bay an average of about 19 knots was recorded at St Kilda Harbour. Read more…
