A west south westerly breeze averaging 21 knots with gusts averaging over 28 knots had been building the waves on Port Philip since the early hours of Wednesday morning. It reached a peak at 1133 when Fawkner Beacon recorded a gust of 39 knots. It was shortly after this that the race was abandoned “due to the weather”. But it was not over by any means.
