This was the third abandoned race this summer but the first to be abandoned after the race had started. Notification of the abandonment was made at 14:28:34 only 2 minutes 29 seconds after the last of the 38 yachts had started to race around course 14. At that stage the fleet was spread over two legs of the course with the leaders closing in on SYC 3. Observations from Fawkner Beacon showed that the breeze had increased from 0 at 1000 to a maximum of 26 knots (gusts to 29) at 1430 before easing to below 10 knots by 1630.
