At the time the race was abandoned the anemometer at Fawkner Beacon stopped turning. There was no wind. It had averaged only 3 knots for the afternoon with significant variation in both strength and direction. Although the BOM had forecast “15 to 20 knots in southern waters during the late morning and early afternoon” the breeze at South Channel Pile recorded an average of about 10 knots. Read more…
