Vale Guy Dwyer

The Commodore, Flag Officers, members and staff of Sandringham Yacht Club mourn the passing of Guy Dwyer.

Guy passed away after recent illnesses on Thursday, 30 September, 2021 aged 72 years. He was a valued member at SYC for 38 years.

He contributed enthusiastically to many facets of SYC including serving on Sail Committee and in later years Guy supported the Club as an experienced and respected Race Management volunteer.

Early years at SYC saw Guy being an integral member of the Crew of Rumbeat skippered by Past Commodore Geoff ‘Hendo’ Henderson. Rumbeat was a fiercely competitive yacht in the late ‘90s to early 2000s in both the SYC Club Championships and Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV) ocean races. Rumbeat won numerous Club Championships and many of the ORCV races including the Melbourne to Hobart ‘Westcoaster’ and the Sovereign Series of 2003.

Later, Guy took an active part in the ORCV participating in Race Management and in the role of Office Manager from 2005-2009.

Guy, with partner Barb Watson, also supported various Recreational Boating events and together they enjoyed these occasions on their former yacht High Handed (a Cavalier 32). Guy and Barb participated keenly in SYC social activities and regularly enjoyed the Members’ Bar camaraderie and friendship with fellow members.

Guy will be very sadly missed by his many friends from all areas of Sandringham Yacht Club. Our sincere condolences are extended to Barb and to Guy’s loving family.
