SYC’s “Intrusion” wins 14th S80 Victorian Championship!

Friday, 11th March 2022

Congratulations to Luke Reinehr and Intrusion’s crew of Mike Keusgen, Jeffrey Goldsmith, Mike Shackleton and Michael Reinehr (flying in from the Sunshine Coast) for winning the 2022 S80 State Titles

With consistent pace and excellent crew work, Intrusion has again taken out the S80 State Championship, held at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club between 5-6 March 2022, with results of 1, 1, 1, 1 (4 points). The regatta was set for six races over the weekend, and then subsequently reduced to four races with racing on Sunday abandoned due to the adverse weather.

This success now has Intrusion clocking up 14 Victorian Titles (and a further runners up nine times) over the last consecutive 23 years, which is a great record for consistency in one-design keel boat racing.

Saturday’s racing commenced in an 8knt northerly which through the day clocked to the south with 20-25knts with building seas. Despite some gear failure at the start of race 3, which saw a jib sheet-block explode, Intrusion recovered well with Joffa demanding that Intrusion be renamed “Makybe Diva as this boat just wants to win”.

With the S80 State Titles rescheduled from its usual early January time-slot due to COVID, a smaller fleet of eleven yachts competed in the S80 State Championship from around the Bay. In second place with 13 points was RYCV’s Bas Huibers “Merak” with HBYC’s “Skipjack” 3rd on 16 points. SYC was also represented with Andrew Buchanan “Escape”.
