SYC Launches Exciting New J/70 Sailing Program for 2026/27

Step aboard one of the fastest-growing sailing pathways at Sandringham Yacht Club with the launch of the Club’s exciting new J/70 Sailing Program for 2026/27.
Designed to attract and retain young and intermediate sailors, the program creates clear pathways into keelboat racing, national-level competition and long-term participation in the sport. The initiative will also support the development of skilled crew for SYC keelboat owners, helping strengthen the broader racing community across the Club.
The new program features four tailored participation streams catering to different ages, experience levels and sailing ambitions.
The Advanced Program (18–35 years) is a high-performance campaign focused on state and national competition, led by Head Coach Mark Wolfenden alongside an experienced coaching team including Barney Walker. For younger sailors, the Youth Squad (14–18 years) provides a structured development pathway with a strong focus on racing tactics, boat handling, teamwork and regatta experience.
SYC will also offer Development Programs for both youth and young adult sailors, creating an accessible entry point into keelboat sailing and fleet racing, while Social Sailing sessions will continue to provide fun, casual opportunities to get out on the water throughout winter and summer.
Applications for the Youth and Advanced Programs are now open, with strong interest already building ahead of the new season.
“The J/70s have brought new young members and past members back into sailing,” said Mischa Suda. “It’s created a community where everyone feels welcome.”
Adding to the excitement, SYC will also host a dedicated winter J/70 regatta series in 2026, including Fleet Racing, Match Racing and 2K Teams Racing events, with Club boats supplied to ensure accessible and affordable competition for members.
