During the Easter holidays SYC junior member, Matty Goss (12yo), represented Sandringham Yacht Club in the 2018 NZ International Optimist Nationals in Picton, New Zealand. The regatta venue was the beautiful waters of the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island.
Matty represented Australia as part of “Team AUS1” who placed 2nd in the Open Division of teams racing narrowly being defeated 2-1 in the final series. Matty placed 1st overall in silver fleet with some extremely close racing in the finals series which also included a close encounter with an Orca who decided to swim through the race course. The Orca later apologised for not giving buoy room.
Matty started sailing at Sandringham Yacht Club at age 5 in the Tackers program with the Boating Academy. Matty has been selected to represent Australia in Thailand later this year as part of the Australian Optimist Senior Development Squad.
