SYC boat yard and marina to re-open under restricted conditions

Friday, 25th September 2020

CORRESPONDENCE TO SYC Tenants and Contractors via email on Friday 25 September

Good afternoon all,

I write with better news today. SYC will be re-opening the boat yard and marina immediately for tenants and contractors. We do so under the following restricted conditions.

  • You are permitted to re-commence work on boats that were mid service at the time of the commencement of the stage 4 lockdown i.e. the job was already underway and being worked on any  time prior to COB Wed 5 August
  • You are permitted to complete the service / maintenance works you had started – whatever the nature of that service work may be, anti-fouling, engine servicing etc.
  • If you have jobs that were mid-service, either in the yard or the marina, and you wish to continue working on them, can you please;
    • Send us through the name of the vessel and re-set out for us the scope of works
    • If you had a job underway on a vessel in the marina, please name the vessel and outline the scope as we may need to cross reference with the owner
    • Could you please forward these to Karen before any work gets underway [email protected]

For clarity, as at 11.30am 25/9/20, we are not permitted to allow;

  • Any new work to commence (it had to be underway in line with the above)
  • For any new vessels that arrived at SYC after the commencement of the stage 4 lockdown, works of any nature, commissioning or otherwise, are not currently permitted
  • We remain hopeful that industry restrictions will ease, and new work, and commissioning work, will be reinstated shortly – as soon as it is, we will re-open.

The following continues to be permitted, as is the case now;

  • SYC staff and boat owners may access boats for emergency and essential matters
  • SYC staff may access the entire waterfront for maintenance / preventative environmental reasons including emergency response capability in the event of medical emergency, fire, oil spill, vessel sinking or the like
  • SYC fuel services may remain open and support emergency and essential services
  • Boats for sale in our marina – brokers and their staff can attend on-site and maintain the boats they are selling

Compliance
I cannot stress how important it is for you to all be 100% compliant. Should there be non-compliance, I have been advised that as our brand and reputation will be at stake, we will close down immediately. So to be clear, if one person transgresses and works outside of the above parameters, we will be closing the yard and marina down for everyone. I have assured the Flag Officers you / we will be compliant.

CovidSafe Reminder
In advance of re-commencing onsite work at SYC, please also be reminded anyone who enters the SYC boat yard or marina for work, without exception, will need to:

1)      ensure they meet their individual mandatory business requirements – updated worker permits, CovidSafe plans and any other industry regs that apply to your type of work.

Could you please forward these to Karen before any work gets underway [email protected]

2)      register their attendance online by signing in – which can be done by clicking here and you will need to fill it in each and every time you work at the Club in line with the regs. If you are a tenant with a fixed weekly roster this can be submitted to [email protected] but it needs to be accurate in the event of an outbreak / for tracing.

Sub-contractors – both in the yard and on the marina
For those of you who use sub-contractors, and they are not on our list of registered contractors, please be reminded it is your responsibility for ensuring the following is in place, before they conduct any works onsite;

  • arrange for them to be inducted, they are signed in and arrange for payment of their casual contractor fee
  • provide their CovidSafe plans, worker permits and any other regs that apply including any industry limitations on multiple site visits per period

We would also appreciate some notice in advance of any subbies requiring the above so that we may schedule in their induction and checking off that their paperwork is in place. If they arrive unannounced and unscheduled, we may not be able to accommodate them there and then. SYC staff continue to work on reduced hours and we anticipate (we hope) being busy.

Looking ahead

We certainly hope restrictions ease shortly and we can open up for all works. In the interim please also note the following;

1)      the travelift will at this stage, operate with first AM bookings from 8am and final lifts from 4pm

2)      in a bid to make up for lost time;

a.       you are permitted to work during daylight hours when it is safe to do so – you are not limited to the 8am – 4.30pm trading hours

b.       you are permitted to work on Sundays in the R&M zone (no cars may enter the yard on Sunday due to OTB family movements & launch ramp activity)

3)      when we do re-open, please ensure you only undertake jobs that you can service in a timely manner and that your resources can adequately deal with – we need quick turnarounds and throughput. We can’t afford to have stagnate boats in the yard on an open-ended basis taking up space

4)      surprises aside, please be meticulous when preparing for jobs to ensure there are no extended wait times for parts and equipment which then holds up boat movements

5)      please do not take on jobs where the scope of work will translate to a boat being in the yard for unacceptably long extended periods – we want boats in and out as quick as possible

I am also pleased to advise that General Committee have approved an incentive for all marina tenants to use the boat yard. We will announce this next week but we are certain it will provide enormous stimulus for the boat yard and we will be promoting your services to the Members as part of this offer. If you have something over and above you would like us to promote regarding servicing, or a special you would like included, then please pass this on to [email protected]

I hope the above is the start of more good news to come.

Warm Regards & Stay Safe,

Richard Hewett
