Sailing the Amalfi Coast of Italy between Naples and Agropoli is in the holiday plans for Sandringham Yacht Club members Mike Welsh and Terry Hall, together with partners and friends, in September 2020. They have chartered a Dufour 460 GL yacht for the rally which will combine some relaxed racing with cruising and just a little Italian cuisine accompanied by a Chianti or two!
Mike and Terry have sailed before with Mariner Boating Holidays and like the format. They will join the Italian Amalfi Coast Yacht Rally for two weeks from September 11 to 26. The fact that all the thinking, planning and organization is done leaves them free to simply enjoy the holiday. They all enjoy the fun racing thrown in on the sailing days but also have plenty of leisure time to follow their own activities and explore some really exotic places even read a book.
Starting in Naples this rally will sail into the Gulf of Naples to Procida, Ischia and Ventoteni before turning south to Sorrento, Positano and Agropoli. The itinerary returns to Naples via Amalfi and Capri, which many people consider the high light of the trip.
These place names all inspire visions of the weathered pastel shades and classic Italian architecture for which the Amalfi Coast is famous. When visited by yacht there are no parking problems, no traffic jams, no multi floor hotel staircases – only the sound of the sea. But if you miss the smell of petrol and the chaos for which the local roads are famous, no problem, take the bus for an exciting day trip to Ravello. The views are stunning and it gives you the chance to feel you are really on the Amalfi trail. Or take the ‘Walk of the Gods’ option from Amalfi to Positano if you need to walk off some pizza and pasta.
September is a great time for cruising this coast. The tourist tide has started its retreat, the water is warm and the winds are mostly around 15 knots.
