Recreational Boating June Guest Speaker – Wednesday 12 June 2019 at 7:30pm

Tuesday, 7th May 2019

The Recreational Boating June Guest Speaker evening is Wednesday 12 June 2019 at 7:30pm in the Port Phillip Room.

ROD SMALLMAN – “MY CROOKED PATHWAY TO THE MELBOURNE-OSAKA DOUBLE HANDER”

An SYC club member, Rod has sailed for “about 50 years” , mostly in dinghies. He is a relative newcomer to keel boats but has been making up for lost time – both cruising and racing.

For 20 years he has been the owner and “Vigneron” at Chirping Bird Wines in the Mornington Peninsula producing both red and white wines. He started building a yacht, in the winery, for the Melbourne- Osaka. Hence an early proposed name for this talk: “Building a Boat in a Boozer”

Unfortunately the boat wasn’t finished in time, so Rod and his eldest son entered the Melbourne-Osaka in Jeanneau Sunfast 3600 and finished 3rd on handicap.

Amongst his other claims to fame are “professional athlete” (might be stretching it a bit) and poet. See his prose below for the release of the Godings Lane Shiraz.

Wines, boat building, Melbourne- Osaka : come and join Rod on Wednesday June 12 in the Port Philip Room at 7.30 PM.

Even better, come and have some dinner in the members bar beforehand!!
