Recreational Boating February Guest Speaker Wrap Up

Thursday, 28th February 2019

On Wednesday February 13 we were treated to “ An Evening with Alma”

Long standing club member Ken Gayler spoke about all aspects of the Alma Doepel: drawing on his 8 years of volunteered work on the project.

The Alma Doepel was launched as a tall ship in 1903 and saw service as lumber and merchant ship before being stripped of her rigging to carry limestone and then being sold for scrap.

In the 1970’s and 80’s she was repaired and refitted, for the first time before leading the Sydney Harbour Parade of Sail in 1988.

She is being repaired, refurbished extensively and refitted to again provide sail training and life experience for young people “ who have lost their way “.

Ken’s enthusiasm and passion for his project shone through. Bernie Moore was on hand to talk about the youth training programs and the effect they have on the young people – based on her first hand experience.

Ken is a biochemist by training, sails Saltshaker in the Wednesday Wonders and is a past Commodore of QCYC.

To Ken and Bernie: many thanks for an interesting evening.
