Recreational Boating 31 October News and Updates

Thursday, 31st October 2019

Safety Initiatives – Rec Boating:  There is a heightened focus on safety for all SYC events. This was partly precipitated by a death in the 2018 Association Cup, giving rise to a review of SYC on-water operations, which resulted in many initiatives for the club. These initiatives were subsequently endorsed by the coroner in the Inquiry findings into the 2018 Association Cup. Additionally, Marine Safety Victoria have drafted a Code of Practice for managing boating events, that is mandatory for clubs like Sandringham Yacht Club. We have therefore seen significant changes for the keelboat and OTB sailing communities. For Rec Boating, it means an enhanced focus on matters like:

  • Greater reliance on skipper and crew details for on water events – hence the requirement for skipper and crew contact details (including emergency contacts) for events (fishing comps, Nav Rallies, Cruise in Companies etc.)
  • During events: SMS sign on and sign off for the fishing comp, or for Cruise in Company events – briefings and scheduled radio check ups whilst underway
  • A greater focus on boats complying with safety and equipment requirements
  • Behind the scenes – more detailed event preparations

These measures are supported by the Rec Boating Committee and are part and parcel of managing events these days. The Recreational Boating Safety Manual is being reviewed in line with the events of the last 18 months. When completed, the Manual will be circulated.

Safe boating!
