Rec Boating – The ‘Not Australia Day’ Cruise Wrap-Up

Thursday, 10th February 2022

After a successful Cruise to Queenscliff in mid-December to close out 2021, and bad weather cancelling the Summer raft Raft-Up in January, the group was really looking forward to the first Cruise in Company event to kick off 2022.

So with expectations high, a fleet of 12 boats set sail for Geelong last Friday morning in spectacular conditions – a forecast 25 degree day with winds from the South East at 10 to 15 knots. Under these champagne sailing conditions all were able to follow the rhumb line direct from SYC to the Geelong channel. Once safely tied up the 29 members and guests on the cruise caught up to enjoy the fine evening weather, meeting for drinks before dinner on the outdoor deck of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. We also enjoyed some success in the Geelong Club’s Friday night draw, with Amo Rizzuto and Ian Cornish both winning tasty Meat Packs.

Saturday was a day to relax and take in the sites of Geelong, with several suggestions from Anne Hunting provided in the Cruise Notes. Most took some time to see the Archie 100 exhibit at the Geelong gallery, while a few just decided to enjoy another perfect weather day and relax by the bay. Saturday evening had some more social time and the awarding of the Nautical Quiz prize to the Boat with the most nautically knowledgeable crew. It was very close, with ‘Kiela’ (Hugh Pilsworth) winning the prize by ½ a point.

With the forecast for Sunday to have a 10-15 knot easterly wind (AGAIN!!) 5 boats opted to wait for a Monday departure. The rest of the fleet left RGYC about 10am and safely motored home to SYC. The group that left on Monday had head winds through the Geelong Channel but by 1pm the 12-15 Knot winds had shifted Southwards and there was some fantastic sailing to close out another great Cruise in Company Weekend.

As always we had a fun time out on the water, so if you are interested please check the Club calendar for details on a couple of our upcoming activities with a busy Cruising in Company summer planned. Click here for more information on upcoming cruises in company.
