OTB News and Updates

Thursday, 21st March 2019

Dear OTB sailors,

OTB action last weekend kicked off on Friday night with our first Twilight Beneteau Fun fleet racing event.

The evening started with 32 young SYC members lining up on the fueling jetty and being selected randomly in to six teams, which kept the teams even and was a great way for everyone to get to know each other better.

Four teams then began preparing boats for their skippers James Sly, Alex Newman and fantastic SYC coaches Ricky and Forrest, while the other two teams sat out the first race on Endeavour IV.

The racing format was for three fleet races, with each team competing in two and sitting out one.

The racing itself was fast, tight and therefore very exciting to watch, with big smiles and lots of laughs filling the boats as they tore around the short race track. A big thank you to the skippers and parents on the water and also those who stayed ashore to get the BBQ going so we had hot food ready when we made it back ashore.

The weather on Sunday was very light as forecast, but JDS in the morning had a lovely 5 knot northerly to work on their skills. We had lots of Optimists in attendance, some I saw trying to sail without a rudder and seven cadets had a great time doing creative drills set by Harrison and Angus in the sticky conditions.

The afternoon sea-breeze arrived in time for club racing and we got two races away for most divisions, although the Optimists enjoyed three close races. The foiling kites could only get the one race away, it turns out the foiling kites don’t foil in under 7 knots, but they eventually arrived as the breeze increased to 10 knots.

This weekend we can look forward to another Beneteau Twilight event on Friday evening and this time we plan to give our young OTB sailors a taste of match racing in classic America’s Cup fashion. You are sure to hear about flights and boxes and see plenty of dial ups and close calls, followed by a BYO BBQ in the OTB area afterwards.

On Sunday morning we have our JDS program followed by our Autumn Series club races in the afternoon, where I hope to see ALL our boats out competing. The forecast looks perfect so get along and enjoy the fun.

I look forward to seeing you around the club.
