OTB News, Updates and State Championships Results!!

Friday, 15th March 2019

Dear OTB sailors,

Congratulations to everyone who competed in a State Championships over the long weekend, I noticed some great results from lots of SYC sailors and from all reports everyone had a great time. In case you missed all the action, here is quick run down.

The Tasar fleet headed to Somers for the long weekend and went to battle with some visitors from other states, including the recent National Champions from Georges River (Not VIC). I spotted four SYC entries on the results who did really well and that included the Ridgeway’s in 4th overall (2nd VIC boat), James Sly & Daisy Laing 5th (3rd VIC), Michah Shuwalow 6th (4th VIC boat) and Heather Macfarlane & Chris Payne 7th (5th VIC boat). Awesome effort!

Our growing 9er fleer of 29er and 49er sailors headed to RGYC to wizz around the Etchells and make them feel old. Congratulations to everyone on making the effort and flying the flag for SYC and special mention to Patrick Distefano on finishing off his 29er career in style with fourth overall, which included a race win. Patrick will now focus on sailing his new Waszp, which is the fourth we have at SYC now!

I’d say it is our fastest growing fleet at the moment, but i think the laser class holds that mantle at the moment.

Ricky Bobby and his gang of Optimist stars headed up the road to take on the rest of Victorian and half the country by the looks of all the interstate entries.

SYC dominated the results with rising star and RBYC based member Matty Goss taking a convincing victory, well done Matty against a super tough field.

We had many other outstanding performances in the 100+ boat fleet, which included a few RBYC based members Ellen Sampson 1st Victorian girl and Scarlett Zerbe 2nd Victorian girl. Liam Stevens finished 3rd in Intermediate fleet closely followed by Dmirty Sorokin in 4th, while another star of the future Lottie Griffith won the green fleet division and Sabian Nuttal finished just off the podium in fourth. Well done to everyone involved and special credit to Coach Ricky for all your efforts.

Finally well done to all our cadet sailors who went to RYCV for the weekend, we had a great time in Williamstown where 34 boats battled in wind from every direction from zero to 30 knots over three days. SYC had three boats in the top ten which included Thomas Johnston and Kylan Thompson (5th), Mischa Suda and Lillyanne Johnston (6th), and Junior Captain Nat Coman and crew Emma Suda (10th).

Congratulations to the rest of the SYC crew.

FRIDAY 15th – Twilight Fun and BBQ

This weekend will be a busy one at SYC, starting with Beneateau Fun Twilight racing on Friday if we can get enough older OTB sailors along to help skipper the boats. The plan is for fleet racing in the club Beneteau fleet this Friday night and match racing next week if all goes well.

If you don’t need to rush off after twilight racing then bring some food to throw on the BBQ afterwards and a few drinks to help you rehydrate, and if you can’t make the racing then join us afterwards. You can utilise the canteen fridge while your out on the water.

SUNDAY 17th – JDS and Autumn Aggregate racing

The forecast looks great on Sunday for JDS coaching in the morning, followed by two club races in the afternoon.

See you around the club.

Kind Regards,

David Suda

OTB Club Captain
