OTB 6 February News & Updates!

Friday, 7th February 2020

Dear OTB sailors and friends,

We made a great start to our Autumn Series last Sunday with two great longer races completed in the shifty and softening westerly breeze.

It was also great to see a few 29ers out on the course and hopefully we can get a few more boats out on the water for racing this Sunday afternoon.

Our OTB “Pie Night” (BBQ) was a great success last Friday and very well attended by lots of new families looking to get more involved in OTB life at SYC.

We have twilight racing on this Friday evening and strongly encourage anyone looking to get into OTB sailing at SYC, young and old, to come out on our start boat Endeavour IV to watch the action up close.

Please meet at the OTB area at 5:30pm if you would like to come out on water.

JDS commences for Optimist and Cadet sailors this Sunday morning and there are still a couple of spots left, so please register asap if you would like to participate.

Best Regards,

David Suda
OTB Club Captain

JDS Autumn Enrolments are now open!

Sandringham Yacht Club invites you to participate in the Junior and Youth Development & Coaching Program for the 2019-2020 Season.

This program is generously subsidised by the Yacht Club and is offered to all members at a very reasonable cost. Participation in Club racing is extremely important and as a squad member, you are expected to participate in Club racing once you reach an appropriate level of skill, in order to ensure your ongoing inclusion in the squad

We would like to encourage all SYC junior sailors to take up this terrific opportunity, which is open to all supported SYC OTB classes.

JDS – International Cadet

An International Cadet is an international recognised junior double handed boat. The Cadet can also be sailed at varying abilities from beginner level to World Championship level. A Cadet is a good example of how children can be taught by their peers – a uniqueness of the class is that a younger sailor is generally the crew and an older more experienced sailor is the skipper. There are 42 registered boats in Victoria and 85 registered in Australia.

JDS – International Optimist

Sandringham Yacht Club’s Opti Training program falls under the Junior Development Squad.

After sailors have learnt the skills needed through Tackers Squad (or Green Fleet at another club) and purchased their own boat they are welcome to join or Junior Development Squad. They will need to be youth members of SYC to participate however this is only $99 a year for youth.

While these sessions are running we would like to invite parents and guardians to sign in with reception and watch their progress from the member’s bar.

If you have any further queries, please don’t hesitate

Laser Training Squad – Come sail a laser!

With all of the amazing Laser Sailing going on at Sandringham Yacht Club this summer, many of our sailors are being inspired to get into the class. We would love to start an all ages Laser training squad to continue to develop this class in the club. All abilities are welcome and we will aim to structure the program around … Read more.
