Labour Day weekend Cruise

Rip Trip Write Up

Following on from an informative Bass Strait Information Session on 16 Feb, where over fifty sailors joined us to learn about upcoming plans for cruising to Refuge Cove and getting our boats ready for the trip. There was a good session too about safely transiting the Port Phillip Heads, which for many of us, was something we had not yet experienced. Many of us especially wanted to know more about the ‘Rip’ before registering for the upcoming Bass Strait Cruise to Refuge Cove. Read more

Cruise write up

March saw another excellent turn out for the Cruise in Company fleet, with 21 SYC boats heading down to Queenscliff on the Saturday of the Labour Day long weekend. With great weather and almost 60 members present, the SYC team settled in for one of those lovely QCYC sunsets on the deck and a great catch up. Read more

Dates:

  • Long cruise – 12 to 20 March 2022

Labour Day Cruise in Company Options:

We will be providing two separate cruise options in March, both of which start on the March Labour Day long weekend, with all boats on both trips cruising down to Queenscliff on Saturday 12 March for the first night.

From Queenscliff on the Sunday two cruise options are available:

  • One being a shorter trip (Option 1) that stays within Port Phillip and returns to SYC on Monday 14 March (the public holiday). Details for the cruise plan for Sunday 13 March will be provided closer to the date, though it is expected to be a cruise from Queenscliff to another location in Port Phillip to spend the final night. This is a three day cruise option.
  • The other longer trip (Option 2) is designed for you to really explore your boating passion or stretch your horizons if a first timer out in Bass Strait. This is a cruise that continues from Queenscliff on Sunday 13 March out the Heads for a week of exploring Bass Strait. The cruise returns to SYC on Sunday 20 March. This is a nine day cruise in total.

The following information provides more detail for the long cruise option and, importantly, has details regarding two elective choices that may provide some benefit to those who are new to venturing out of Port Phillip, or those who simply may wish to refresh their knowledge after a couple years of not being able to actively cruise.

Labour Day Cruise to Bass Strait – 12 to 20 March 2022

Join us for a fun nine day adventure as we Cruise in Company going out the Port Phillip Heads and explore the spectacular Victorian coastline by boat.

The Cruise is open to all seaworthy power or sailing vessels and will depart SYC on Saturday 12 March, spending the first night at Queenscliff. There we will wait for slack tide on Sunday and ensure we have a good weather window before leaving the Heads. The February and March weather conditions are usually favourable for cruising in the Bass Strait.

We are planning, weather and wind permitting, to include stops at Western Port, Refuge Cove and Deal Island before returning to QCYC. Optional cruise routes and destinations will be considered in the event of less than ideal weather windows. Our goal is to be outside the bay for five to seven nights with another two nights at QCYC, once on the way out and once again when re-entering the bay, before returning to SYC.

It’s a great way to see out the Summer on your boat and enjoy the comradery of like-minded sailors. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to see Bass Strait for the first time, or to enjoy it again, all in the company and safety of other Cruisers.

If you plan on joining us for the Labour Day Cruise to Bass Strait, the Recreational Boating Committee highly recommend that you join us for the Bass Strait Information Session. If you are unable to attend the information session and want to join the Labour Day Cruise to Bass Strait, please contact Doug Jackson at 0400 869 446 or the SYC Boating office.
