SYC Junior Development Squad – Green Fleet Program 2017-2018
Applications are now open to join Sandringham Yacht Club’s JDS Green Fleet Program for 2017-2018.
What is Green Fleet?
Green Fleet is the entry level Off The Beach club coaching and introductory race program for young sailors who have successfully completed a Tackers 3 sailing course (or have been assessed by the Green Fleet Co-Ordinator), and who wish to further advance their sailing to competition level.
The safe harbour of Sandringham Yacht Club provides young sailors with the opportunity to extend their sailing experience and build confidence on the water. It’s a great way to meet new friends, practice sailing techniques and to develop an understanding of basic racing rules. Green Fleet is designed to introduce sailors and their families to racing and to what it means to be part of the Sandringham Yacht Club community in a fun and simple way.
At the completion of the Green Fleet program, sailors will be able to either crew in an International Cadet or purchase their own Optimist. They will be encouraged to join in Club racing on Sunday afternoons in the main fleet. There is also the option of leasing one of the club’s boats for a season.
How does Green Fleet work?
The Green Fleet program will run on Sundays from October through to the end of March. In the morning session, you will do some basic racing practice while receiving on water coaching in the Club’s Training Optimists. In the afternoon, you may have the opportunity to sail in one of the Club Training Optimists with the main fleet if weather conditions permit.
In 2017-2018 Green Fleet participants will initially sign up for the first half of the Green Fleet season only (7 sessions in October- December). At the end of this period, current participants will be given first option to participate in the second half of the program (February- March). Any places not filled will then be offered to other Tackers, 3 Graduates.
The Green Fleet program is coached by Yachting Australia endorsed OTB sailors from SYC and mentored by volunteer parents and members. It is designed to encourage a life-long love of the water and boating for the whole family – either socially or seriously. Experienced coaches will ensure sailors receive the best possible advice in their sailing pursuits.
Much of the Green Fleet program involves improving boat-handling skills while participating in the fun on water sailing games and activities. This is balanced with an introduction to racing and racing rules for those who are ready.
What sailing experience do I need to have?
To participate in Green Fleet you need to have completed Tackers 3, or by assessment by the Green Fleet Co-Ordinator.
You must also be a Junior Member of Sandringham Yacht Club.
What is expected of Green Fleet parents?
Green Fleet is a program that requires commitment from Green Fleet parents/guardians. An important aspect of Green Fleet is to introduce parents and families to the concept of sailing and what it means to be part of the Sandringham Yacht Club community. Parents/guardians are required to attend all Green Fleet sessions with their children. We actively encourage parents to observe the training on the Club’s committee boat to get up close to the action, to assist in the running of the training races and to participate in the SYC OTB volunteer roster, on or off the water.
What is the Cost?
The program is generously subsidised by the Club with a nominal charge of $180 for each half of the program (i.e. $180 for Oct-Dec, $180 for Feb – March) applicable to each participant. However, there are limited places and usually, we have waiting lists, so be sure to get in early (first in, best dressed!).
Green Fleet Calendar
Sessions will typically take place on a weekly basis as set out in the OTB Calendar 2017-18, see OTB section of the club website.
