POB Training Manikin

SYC offers members access to a dedicated Person Overboard training manikin (Wendy), available to borrow through the Boating Department.

This purpose built training tool provides a realistic and practical way to rehearse person overboard procedures on your own boat. At approximately 40kg dry and significantly heavier once in the water, the manikin accurately simulates the challenges of recovering a person, helping skippers and crew understand what is involved in a real situation.

The manikin floats and can be fitted with a harness to assist with retrieval drills, allowing crews to practise different recovery methods suited to their vessel. It is particularly valuable for testing your equipment, refining communication onboard and building confidence in your crew’s response.

Using the manikin quickly highlights how physically demanding and technically challenging a recovery can be, reinforcing the importance of preparation and clear procedures. Every boat is different, and this is an opportunity to work through what will be most effective for you and your crew.

Members are encouraged to make the most of this resource and incorporate it into their regular on water practice.
