I LOVE THE REC BOATING GROUP – Michael Kostos – Club Capitan Recreational Boating

Thursday, 9th August 2018

Once again a wonderful morning was spent with 98 SYC members to enjoy the festivities of our annual breakfast.

This event is always a success and wouldn’t be so, if not for our sponsors who support us so generously. So, I will take this opportunity to thank Pro Caffe who donated the coffee beans used to give us all our morning fix of coffee and they also donated a coffee machine as the main prize for our raffle. Tommy Raft who is a constant supporter of SYC events with his donations of delicious hampers filled to the brim with fresh fruit and veggies. SYC supplied HVR vouchers which are always well received and the Rec boating committee who donated Hampers full of goodies.

Our annual Quiz this year was again written and delivered by Ross Cunningham, it was a brain tampering challenge to deliver all the correct answers with the winners being Robert and Rob Lane, Leanne and Sergio Cinerari and Phil and Carolyn Strong and they walked away with three bottles of wine.

There were quite a few club winners this year

1) SYC cup was retained by Dave and Kate McCutcheon on IV x VIII

2) The CUB cup returned to SYC also after 17 years in the hands of RVMYC who reluctantly handed the cup back to us. The winners were Dave and Kate McCutcheon with Phil Strong and John Evans coming second and the master Bill Stubbs and Mal Billings in third, all the winners left with a slab of Carlton Draught in their arms

Another proud announcement were the recipients of awards from the Victorian sailing awards

1) Services to sailing won by George Shaw

2) Motor Yachts person of the year awarded to Dave McCutcheon

Our Major award of the recreational boating person for the year was awarded to Ian Mc Williams, who continually works behind the scenes supporting so many aspects of Rec Boating and SYC club activities including the Melbourne to Osaka Race. Ian is a very active user of his Yacht and is always available to lend a hand to the club and members.

And then the RAFFLE

Kate and Maddie where our barrel girls and the prizes kept coming with so many of our boating fraternity walking away feeling like winners.

Once again, the morning seemed to be enjoyed by all who participated.

The SYC breakfast was the last official event for me finishing my term of two years as SYC Rec Boating Captain. The last two years from my perspective have gone rather fast and I must admit I have enjoyed every minute of it, I have been so privileged to work with some very talented and lovely people who work tirelessly to make this amazing club work so well.

My roll of Rec boating Captain has also given me the opportunity to meet many new faces around the club and establish new friendships which ill carry with me in the future.

Thank you once again for the opportunity to represent Rec boating and I look forward to seeing you all at future events

Enjoy your club

Michael Kostos
