Last Day Competing on the Water for a Club Legend – Phil Spry-Bailey AO

Today marks the end of an era at Sandringham Yacht Club, as our esteemed Life Member, Phil Spry-Bailey, sailed his beloved Magic for the last time.

For 52 years, Phil has been at the heart of our club, embodying the spirit of camaraderie, competition, and contribution. Since joining in 1973, he has owned and raced Vinter, Vanquish, and Magic. He has always welcomed sailors of all levels aboard, fostering new talent while competing fiercely in club and ocean racing.

Phil’s trophy cabinet tells the story of a true competitor, with victories in the A D Mackenzie Bell, Alan Shiels Memorial, Anonyma Cup, Benitos Treasure, Captain Kuiken, Commodore-in-Chief Trophy, Dorothy Cup, Jisuma Trophy, JJ Jarold Trophy, Katoura Salver Trophy, Kingston Slalom Trophy, Peter Taylor Trophy, Port Phillip Trophy, Roy Hoffert Trophy, Sun Cup, SYC Centenary Cup, Wyvern Cup and Century Class Trophy.
He has also had a number of series wins in the Saturday Round the Stix and Wednesday Wonders Winter Series. His offshore accomplishments include seven Sydney to Hobart races and countless Bass Strait crossings.

Beyond racing, Phil’s dedication to the club has been immense. His leadership within the SYC Foundation, the Finance and Audit Committee, and the clubhouse development has left a lasting legacy. Recognized with Life Membership in 2011, Phil has been instrumental in shaping the club we know today.

Phil’s lifelong love for the sea and sailing will forever be part of SYC’s history. While he and Magic will be deeply missed on Port Phillip, his contributions and friendships will remain an enduring part of our club.

We will miss you on the water Phil, but we look forward to seeing more of you in the Clubhouse.

As part of our heritage video series, Phil was interviewed in recent years by the late Chris Carlile – you can watch the video by clicking here
