On Wednesday 24 February SYC hosted 130+ of the volunteers from the laser regattas. The event was an appreciation dinner to thank all the volunteers for their tireless efforts across the five Laser regattas being held only months and sometimes, weeks apart from November 2019 to February 2020. SYC along with the VLA delivered three World Championships, the Laser States and the Laser Nationals. In addition the volunteers also delivered the laser course for Sail Melbourne as well as SYC’s signature dinghy event, Sail Sandy. In all there were a total of 7 regattas.
These events combined attracted 1150 competitors from 55 countries, with 156 coaches and the events were held over 33 competition (regatta) days.
In all there were 200 volunteers enlisted to help deliver these events and we estimate volunteers contributed some 60,000+ hours to the running of these events. These are compelling numbers by any measure and all in all, it was an incredibly successful summer and it was lots of fun.
The evening was so that SYC and the VLA can simply say thank you to the volunteers and their partners for their amazing collective effort delivering the 2020 summer of laser regattas.
