Calling SYC Recreational Boaters – Geelong Charity Swim – Request for on water assistance

Thursday, 9th March 2017

Dear SYC Recreational Boaters,

Subject:  Geelong Charity Swim – Request for on water assistance

We have been approached by long distance swimmer, Paul Hoffman, with the following request for help.  It is a worthy cause and it would be great if someone could help him out.

You may be able to help in getting the message out there that we are looking for a support boat for the Geelong to Brighton swim.  Thank you very much for anything you could to, it is greatly appreciated.

The swim is being done on either Friday 17th or Saturday 18th March dependent on weather. We plan on commencing the swim from Eastern Beach, Geelong next to the Geelong Sea Baths and swimming across to Brighton Baths. The plan is to commence the swim at high tide in the evening (8pm) on the day with the best predicted forecast. I anticipate the swim taking around 24hours.

The swim is a charity swim raising awareness and funds for Will Murray who was severely injured in an accident at Half Moon Bay Jetty last year and also for a charity called the East Timor Hearts fund who provide lifesaving surgical interventions to young people from East Timor.

We have a small RIB with a 4hp motor that will be travelling along side the swimmer for the duration of the swim, however what we need is a main support boat. We will have a team of 5 people (2xIRB drivers and 3 crew who will be rotating and looking after the swimmer). So what we are looking for is a larger boat that is big enough to carry our team and equipment in addition to the skipper and their team. The boat that we had planned to use was a 52ft vessel, however it is now awaiting a part and will not be ready in time.

From a permissions perspective we already have permits and procedures from the Melbourne Port Authority to cross the shipping lanes and the Regional Port Authority to cross Hopetoun Channel in Corio Bay.

Once again thank you very much for anything you can do to assist us in sourcing a boat, I sincerely appreciate it.

Should you need any further details, please don’t hesitate to contact Paul on 0405 312 543.
