The Whalley Cup NavRally Regatta is open to competitors from all Clubs; however the Cup itself has traditionally been fought out between Sandringham Yacht Club, Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club and Mordialloc Motor Yacht Club.
The oldest Log Trail event on Port Phillip, commencing in 1924 when SYC member A.J. (Bert) Whalley gave a Cup to an event between Sandringham Yacht Club, Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club and Mordialloc Motor Yacht Club. Back in the day, between the three Clubs, this event would attract the biggest boating fleet of the season on Port Phillip!!
The event is designed to test the skill of the skipper and navigator and is open to any type of vessel. The winner of the race is determined by who can keep their boat on course and closest to their nominated time schedule.
Boats must nominate their boat speed from 5, 6, 7.5, 10 and 12 knots on entry and on the day proceed around the course at their nominated speed passing positions at specified times. Points are lost for being too early or too late at the various positions on the course. The TackTracker system is used to calculate the results.
