Just over 250 keelboat sailors celebrated the most important keelboat function of the year, 2018/2019 Sail Presentation Night on Friday 24th May in the Port Phillip Room. Everyone enjoyed a three course meal prepared by our wonderful team of Chef’s, while sharing stories from the season, having a laugh and congratulating fellow members for the achievements.
Special mention to Jordan Sunkel-Lozell who was recipient of this year’s Lou Abraham’s Trophy for the Intermediate Sailor of the Year.
Jade and Aaron Cole were awarded the Vanessa Higgins Memorial Trophy for Keelboat Sailor of the Year.
This is a new annual award, to be selected by Sail Committee and is to be awarded to one or multiple people who have been a stand out keelboat racing sailor within and outside the club in the last 12 months. For this award we have re-purposed a very special trophy being the Vanessa Higgins Memorial Trophy, that was originally used for Division 0. Vanessa was a very active, well-loved and well respected member of our club including being the head of the social committee in 2001-2002. She was very often referred to as the “life of the party” and in 2004, was awarded Club person of the year. Unfortunately however, Vanessa tragically passed away too young. This trophy was donated in her memory and the Sail Committee have this year, decided to reallocate this beautiful trophy to the SYC Keelboat Sailor of the Year.
We take this opportunity to thank all members for their continuous involvement in the Sandringham Yacht Club Sailing program, with special thanks to the Sail Committee and Race Management volunteers without whom we would not have a program. Thank you to Mercedes-Benz Brighton, for their continuous support of our Keelboat racing and our great Club! All the members of the Sail Committee and staff wish to congratulate all the winners in our Winter and Summer Series’ and for making the racing so competitive and successful.
