19 August 2020 – Update from the Commodore

Wednesday, 19th August 2020

CORRESPONDENCE TO MEMBERS via email on Wednesday 19 August

Dear Members,

I hope this email finds everyone safe and well.

As we continue to plan for the reopening of our Great club after our second forced closure, we keep making plans looking forward to the easing of the current restrictions. Unfortunately, these plans, require ongoing adjustments to suit the rules/conditions of the day.

Although every Annual General Meeting (AGM) is important, this year’s AGM carries a little more importance, especially due to the cancelling of our March Ordinary General Meeting due to COVID-19. Currently scheduled to be held on the third Tuesday of September, the AGM is where we deliver our financial results, meet our statutory obligations, whilst also celebrating the following items:

  • Succession of General Committee
  • Club person of the year
  • Stirrer of the year
  • Awarding of Life Membership

For these reasons it is my preference to physically hold the meeting, but due to the COVID-19 restrictions, it is unlikely this will be possible on September 15. As per the Constitution, we are permitted to hold the meeting as late as the end of November so therefore, we have rescheduled the AGM to October 27. We also have one further back up date of November 24 if required. You will receive the official AGM notice shortly.

This also then defers the succession timing of Flags Officers, Treasurer and Club Captains. All existing officers are agreeable to the extension as are those nominees who form part of our succession plan to come into office. For the record, it was not my idea to prolong my term as Commodore!

For similar reasons we have also deferred Opening Day to Saturday October 31 (with a back-up date of December 5). We would rather stage the Opening Day festivities in a format you are accustomed to and that is more likely by pushing the date back. Should restrictions ease and we find ourselves in the fortunate position to get the sailing season underway prior to Opening Day then we will. I understand the incoming Commodore has adopted the “Red & White” theme again for this year’s event. So, start your planning.

By now, you would have received your membership subscriptions that are due and payable by the end of the month. While I understand that you are currently unable to visit our great club, I hope that with the 25% discount to our fees, that you can remain a member and enjoy the good times again soon. If you would like to discuss your circumstances and how the club may assist you, please reply to this email and we will arrange for a Flag Officer to give you a confidential phone call.

I also wanted to share with you a little video on SYC. To watch it click here and hopefully it reminds you of the good times. Please share it with your friends.

And finally, Podcast #17 has been released (click here to tune in), and my thanks to special co-host Kate Mitchell who joined the podcast trio of George, Deeksy and Ian who continue to do a great job.

Remember: We all in the same storm, just in different boats.
